MSMWHS217 Gas Test Atmospheres

Gas test training, on-site Adelaide, Gawler, Barossa, Riverland, Murray Bridge, Adelaide Hills, Mildura and regional SA, NSW & VIC.  So as to control the atmospheric hazards associated with work in confined spaces, it is necessary to test for, level of oxygen, atmospheric contaminants and any flammable gas or vapour present in the space.

Testing the atmosphere in a confined space for gases is a routine part of the risk management process.  Testing needs to be carried out by a  competent person using a suitable, correctly calibrated detector. 


This training delivers the skills and knowledge required to test the working atmosphere, using electronic test apparatus, to find out if it is safe for the proposed work. Workplace atmospheres may include visible and invisible hazards and hazardous surfaces. It applies to situations where an individual may be required to carry out gas testing of an atmosphere prior to entering a specific area or workspace. The competency requires the person to interpret readings and take actions based on the interpretation  


Course Content

  • Recognise and assess conditions that require testing
  • Use gas testing equipment
  • Take readings, interpret and communicate relevant data
  • Take required action if readings are unacceptable
  • Clean and maintain gas testing equipment in accordance with procedures


  Key Learning Outcomes

The competency requires the person to interpret readings and take acting’s based on the interpretation.


Units of Competency

On successful completion of this course, students will be eligible for a Statement of Attainment (SOA) for:

  • MSMWHS217 Gas test atmospheres

An SOA will be issued by Skills Network Australia Ltd within 30 days of completion of the course, provided all USI, fees and charges have been finalised.

The units of competency listed above are current on the National Register of VET at the time of publication.


Prerequisites

There are no pre-requisites for this course.


Course Requirements

Foundation skills are the underpinning communication skills required for participation in the workplace, the community and in adult education and training.

Learning – to learn to test gas in a range of atmospheres

Reading – to understand work instructions

Writing – to complete documentation such as reports/risk assessments.

Oral communication – to communicate with other personnel

Numeracy – to read measurements and gas level


Delivery Modes

1 day classroom training and assessment.

Training and assessment can be adjusted to account for specific workplace requirements and the existing skills and knowledge of the students.


Locations

Training and assessment may be held at a training facility or on a client’s site. Please contact us for more information.


Renewal

The recommended industry standard recommend that refresher training should be carried out every two years. Ask your employer about their currency expectations.

Horizontal and Vertical Entry Simulation:
The trailer’s side hatch door replicates tight, horizontal entry scenarios, ideal for confined space practice. We also include specialized confined space rescue winches and other entry equipment for a comprehensive learning experience.


Heights Training Platform:
The roof of our trailer has a dedicated heights platform, simulating access and egress in elevated environments. Stabilizers attached at each corner provide a secure, steady base, minimizing movement during practical exercises.

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for confined spaces and heights
  • Rescue and isolation equipment such as winches, lockout panels, and ‘gotcha’ kits
